The question isn’t “should I take magnesium?” – if you’re on certain medications (PPIs, diuretics), struggling with sleep, dealing with muscle cramps, or training regularly, there’s a good chance supplementation makes sense. The question is which form, and the answer depends entirely on what you’re trying to achieve.
Understanding Bioavailability
Not all magnesium supplements deliver equal amounts of usable mineral. Bioavailability – how much your body actually absorbs and can use – varies dramatically between forms. This matters because the cheapest option often means you’re absorbing very little, while the most expensive might be overkill for your needs.
Magnesium Oxide: The Budget Option
Low absorption (around 4%), but there’s a place for it. If you need both magnesium supplementation and relief from constipation, oxide’s poor absorption means more stays in the gut where it draws water and stimulates bowel movements. Cheap, effective for that dual purpose. Not ideal if you want magnesium for muscle function, sleep, or general wellness.
Magnesium Citrate: The Solid Middle Ground

Magnesium Bisglycinate/Glycinate: The Premium Choice
This is where bioavailability really shines – up to 80% absorption. Chelated to the amino acid glycine, which itself has calming properties. No laxative effect, gentle on sensitive stomachs, effective at lower doses. More expensive, but you’re paying for what actually gets into your system.

I see a lot of gym-recommended magnesium purchases. The advice isn’t wrong – intense exercise increases magnesium requirements – but the form matters more than most trainers realise.
Bisglycinate makes sense here because:

- No GI issues that might interfere with training

Magnesium Malate: The Energy and Fatigue Specialist
Magnesium malate combines magnesium with malic acid, a compound involved in the Krebs cycle — the energy production pathway in your cells. It’s absorbed well, is generally gentle on the gut, and the malic acid component may support energy metabolism independently of the magnesium itself. It comes up most often in conversations about chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, where some research — modest but consistent enough to be interesting — suggests benefit for muscle pain and energy.
